American sycamore - Platanus occidentalis

Native to South Carolina's sandy lowlands, the American sycamore is a fast-growing shade tree known for its mottled, camouflage-like bark and broad, cooling canopy. Unlike many sandy-soil natives, it isn't a drought specialist by nature — but its long taproot travels deep through loose, sandy ground to reach moisture other trees can't, letting it thrive where the soil drains fast.

Expect roughly 15 ft of height by year 5, 30 ft by year 10, 45 ft by year 15, and 60 ft by year 20 under good growing conditions — eventually reaching 75-100 ft at full maturity.

Because of its size and vigorous root system, plant sycamores at least 20 feet from your home's foundation, driveways, and utility lines.
